The Spring sports scene in Everett is beginning to heat up, with nearly a quarter of the season already in the books.
Each team will be reevaluating where they stand now to make the proper tuneups needed to put themselves in position to compete for a playoff spot down the line.
Heres’s a quick look into how some of the varsity teams are performing in the early stages of the season (as of 4/23/19).
Baseball
The boys in Crimson have played three games so far (fourth match was cancelled due to rain), putting together a convincing win over league rival Revere (16-2) to go with two close losses to Winchester (5-2) and Lynn Classical (7-2).
Signs, like the win over Revere, indicate the team has strength on the mound, but inconsistent performances there has led the Crimson to a 1-2 record.
The team’s ace, senior four-year player Evan Mallard (1-1), will be looked upon going forward to put together more performances like the one he had in the team’s lone victory.
“If we have an ace, he’s it,” said assistant coach Joe Lento Sr. “When he throws strikes, he’s very tough to hit. If he can stay away from walks, we’ll be fine,” said Lento.
Senior catcher Jonathan Fitzgerald led the way in the win over Revere, almost hitting for the cycle (3-for-4, single, double, and triple) while driving home four runs.
“We are counting on the two of them, they’ve been around for us,” said Lento.
Lacrosse
At 0-3 so far this season, Head coach Anthony Genualdo hasn’t seen a win yet for his young squad, but the hope is the experienced seniors will be able to lead the team in the right direction going forward.
The teams all-time leading point-getter, senior Jason Suppa, and newcomer to lacrosse Duke Doherty, have led the team so far with 5 goals apiece.
Softball
For the first time in several seasons the Lady Tide snagged an opening day victory (17-8 over Melrose) and then followed that up with another win (8-3 over Revere) before falling, 6-4, to Latin Academy. A big, 12-1, win over Somerville boosted the team to 3-1 overall.
Head coach Stacy Schiavo, in her 21st season at the helm, is excited about the team’s potential.
“This group works well together. All but four of our players have played together In the summer league so it’s been like year-round practice for them. You can have a great team and players, but if they don’t play well together you won’t win,” said Schiavo, who only lost two players from last season.
With a winning record in tow, look for the Lady Tide to continue to be propelled by senior catcher Kaylee Nearen (3-for-4, four RBI in win over Melrose), freshman pitcher Celeste Fuccillo (6Ks, 5 hits, 2 earned runs in the win over Revere), and junior pitcher Ariana Garay (7 innings, 4 K’s, 1 BB, 3 hits, 1 earned runs in win over Somerville).
