Boys’ Tennis – First year head coach Steve Gallagher, a 2007 EHS grad, has yet to see his team pick up a win so far this spring. The Tide currently sit at 0-13, but have four more matches still before the end of the season. Coach Gallagher was quick to insert that his team’s overall record, though, is not an indication of the team’s effort and progress. “We’ve actually had a good year, but we play in a really tough conference (Northeastern Conference)” Said Gallagher. “The kids are having fun and getting better with each match. They are determined to play well right now, and the hope is we can carry the development into next year,” said Gallagher. The team will be back in action Wednesday (5/22 @ 4PM) at Medford HS, Thursday (5/23 @ 4PM) at Somerville HS, and finally at Peabody HS (5/29 @ 4PM) to close the season.
Coed Track & Field – At this time last year the track team was winless in all its meets, but things are different this time around. The team – both the boys and girls – have gone 3-4 overall on the season, an improvement second year head coach Jehu Cimea has taken note of ahead of the division 1 state track meet at Lowell HS Saturday (5/25). “Last year, we were still recovering from a lot of our runners graduating the year before, but things are different this year because we have the depth,” said Cimea. The resurgent Tide are going into Saturday’s meet with confidence, according to Cimea, who listed the athletes who broke school records while competing this year. The list included the record-breaking 200-meter girls’ relay of Jessica Santos, Victoria Chapparro, Cyara Lambert and Lucia Seide who finished with a time of 1:51.18. Junior Carolann Cardinale broke the school’s javelin competition record, with a distance of 112 feet and 6 inches, and junior Lucia Seide holds new school records for the long jump (16 feet 10 inches) and the 55-meter dash (7.46 seconds). Saturday’s state meet will start at 10AM.
Softball – The Lady Tide (8-5) are two Ws away from locking up a slot in the state tournament and get a chance Friday (5/24, 4PM) to pick up one of them at home against Waltham. But before they hit the field, the graduating seniors including Yalixa Colon, Sidney Hennessey, Rachel Zullo, and Kaylee Nearen will all be honored as part of this year’s Senior Night.
