500 EHS graduates entering the race

By Josh Resnek

In two weeks, Everett High School will graduate approximately 500 girls and boys, many of whom will be heading to college in the fall.

School officials have pointed proudly to the wide variety of four year colleges the graduates will be attending.

Up at the top of the educational tier for colleges come those heading to Tufts University, to Boston College and Boston University.

All of those are in the top 40 best colleges and universities in the United States.

At about $70,000 a year they are among the most expensive institutions to attend.

One of the graduates has received a posse scholarship to attend Denison University in Ohio. POSSE scholars are recruited from ten cities across the nation including Boston.

POSSE President and Founder Deborah Bial was awarded a 2007 MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship for her innovative work in college access.

EHS senior have variously received enormous stipends, direct awards, college aid and scholarships as they prepare for next year.

EHS graduates will also be attending George Washington University, Howard, Clemson, Endicott and the various UMass incarnations in Boston, Lowell and in Amherst.

A handful of EHS graduates will enter the armed forces.

A larger number will join trade groups, or start their own business, or find jobs in the healthy economy.
