Does good deed for couple on Cape Cod
By JOSH RESNEK
During a weekend stay in West Yarmouth on the Cape, the mayor put on his official cap to marry two surgeons whoseReverend could not do the service at the last minute.
When the mayor is vacationing, he does not like to work but in this instance, he made an exception.
Surgeons Matt Lalliath and Naomi Wiens got married Saturday.
Wiens was wearing her wedding dress and was ready for the ceremony when the Reverend didn’t show.
Because of the Coronavirus, the wedding had been vastly scaled down, although neither the bride nor the groom nor the mayor wore a face mask for a publicity photograph that was taken on the beach – which is fairly incredible given that two surgeons were tying the knot and should have known better.
The mayor should have known better.
Anyway, the bride’s mother searched frantically on the beach for someone to officiate.
She found the mayor of Everett.
The mayor understood he does not have the statutory power to conduct or to officiate a wedding.
However, he apparently called the governor who allowed him to officiate.
After the wedding, the governor called to congratulate the newly married couple.
Except for not wearing masks and socially distancing, this is a nice story about the mayor stepping in to do a good deed.
