Fuccillo leads way toppling Somerville 7-6

Behind a note-worthy performance on the mound from junior pitcher Celeste Fuccillo, the Lady Tide picked up their first win of the season, topping Somerville 7-6 in the ninth inning.
A three-year starter for Everett, Fuccillo came into the match having surrendered 8 earned runs to Medford High School in the May 26 loss (14-2), but it was her bounce-back performance that stole the show and helped the Tide eke out the win.
“Celeste pitched an amazing game,” said Crimson Tide Head Coach Stacy Poste-Schiavo, who watched her ace fan 14 batters on the day. “After the Medford game, we told her she needed to lay off the outside pitches because when they came around late, they were getting a piece of the ball. She adjusted and as a result, she had 14 strikeouts and only 5 hits,” said Poste.

The pep talk and critique seemingly resonated with Fuccillo, who started the win in promising fashion as she took down Somerville’s first two batters by strikeout and later assisted freshman first baseman Bryanna Mason from the mound for the final out. She went on to pitch a complete game with only two walked batters.
The ninth inning winning heroics came off the bat of senior Maddy Smith, who got to third on a triple and scored on a single by sophomore Kayley Rossi.

“We were getting the bat on the ball but hitting directly to people in position throughout the game until the last two innings,” said Poste-Schiavo. “The girls never gave up and fought until the end. Maddy’s triple and Rossi’s hit were perfectly executed,” she said.
The Lady (1-2) will take the diamond at Glendale Park on Wednesday, June 2 against Malden at 4 PM. Next up, a trip across Route 16 to visit Chelsea on Thursday, June 3 at 4 PM.
