Host agreement jockeying begins in earnest with city and state involved

By Josh Resnek

The Massachusetts Gaming Commission has called for the reopening of the Host Community Agreement between Everett and Wynn LLC to address the concerns raised during a series of public hearings recently held on the matter.

In nits response to the city council, the MGC emphasized, that if necessary, it will get involved in the negotiation process.

Presently, it is believed discussions are right now underway between the city and Wynn officials regarding the renegotiation of the Host agreement.

The expansion of casino gambling to a planned facility across the street from the Encore Boston Harbor Casino requires such a renegotiation, according to Councilor Darren Costa and lawyers for the casino as well as the MGC.

“The current agreement with Encore Boston Harbor falls short of potential property tax revenues for the city. As Wynn continues to generate significant revenue, we can reasonably request common-sense improvements for Everett’s development,” Costa said in an article appearing in the Leader Herald last week.

He believes the city can do better than the original deal guaranteeing the city about $30 million a year now that casino is grossing well over $60 million a month.

“The MGC’s determination marks a positive step forward, urging the City of Everett and Encore Boston Harbor to engage in meaningful negotiations for the best outcome. As residents, let us remain engaged and vocal in advocating for responsible and mutually beneficial development. Together, we can ensure that our city and its residents remain a top priority in this discussion,” Costa said.

The city has remained mum about negotiations or discussions that are now believed to be ongoing.

The MGC would require total transparency should it become involved.

What exactly the MGC might require is also presently unknown.
