On Zoom call from hotel room

By JOSH RESNEK

The mayor has missed many meetings of the School Committee in the past several months, an indication to voters how sincere he is about becoming a voting member of the School Committee.

However, the mayor showed himself to be a full-out sneak attending last Monday’s ZOOM School Committee meeting from his hotel room inside the Ritz Carlton on the beach side of the island in Aruba while at the same time pretending to be in Everett.

He did not mention where he was. He acted as though he was in Everett.

LEADER STAFF REPORT

The mayor’s office revealed to the city council Monday night that the city spent $268,000 for Christmas decorations.

The mayor’s office failed to provide information or documents about the bid process – if any – that preceded the purchase of the Christmas wreaths or the tree or the services of an electrical company to install everything that cost $23,000.

Councilor Fred Capone questioned the $268,000 expense and the procurement effort.

“I am requesting invoices and bid process information,” he told the mayor’s representative.

Capone said he was concerned about the expense for the Christmas decorations and that several constituents had requested that he inquire about them.

Wynn Resort execs cash out million$

By JOSH RESNEK

It is rarely a good sign of things to come when the top executives of a major company are selling off multi-million dollars’ worth of their stock.

Wynn CEO Matt Maddox sold 59,000 shares within the last two weeks.

He received approximately $6.3 million when the transaction settled.

Vice-President Elaine Whittemore has sold hundreds thousands of dollars of her stock recently, as well in a number of transactions recorded with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

In both cases, the executives sold stock they were given by the company in lieu of salary because of the consequences the epidemic has caused for the worldwide gaming giant founded by Steve Wynn.

Maddox still owns 394,549 shares of Wynn stock.

He was paid a total of $18 million in cash and equities by Wynn Resorts in 2018.

In fact, the sale of the Maddox shares is not believed to be a lack of confidence in the company, but rather, his effort to compensate himself for salary he did not receive during the year.

Mayor blames residents for virus spread

By JOSH RESNEK

Everett counted nearly 700 new cases of the COVID-19 virus during the past seven days.

The week began with elevated numbers of new infections in this city and among all our neighboring cities and towns.

The mayor has placed the blame for the spread of the virus on residents.

He claims the virus is being spread from apartment to apartment and from home to home by families failing to adhere to pleas for social distancing and face masks.

Massachusetts reported more than 5,500 new cases last week and 77 deaths.

State infections numbers rose to about 40,000 new cases in the past seven days.

At the former Whidden Hospital now owned and run by the Cambridge Health Alliance here in Everett, beds are hard to find.

The hospital is crowded and busy.

“The hospital is packed. It is not entirely filled with COVID-19 patients. A lot of people are sick,” said an employee of the hospital who wished to remain unnamed.
