Malden hands EHS basketball first losses

By Lorenzo Recupero

After racing out to strong 2-0 starts to the season, both Crimson Tide boys and girls basketball met their kryptonite in Greater Boston League rival Malden High School.

The boys dropped their matchup, 59-46, and the girls lost 53-39, respectively.

It was the stifling Malden defense that outpaced the Crimson Tide boys squad, who entered the matchup scoring 61 points per game but were held to under 50 for the first time this season. Crimson Tide leading scorer, senior Steven Cordero, who averaged 24 points per game entering the matchup, was held to 12 points total. Going up against a set game plan to reduce his touches and scoring, Cordero was held to just 2 points (free throws) in the second half of the wire-to-wire win by Malden. Kevin Ruiz and Joseph Anderson each chipped in 10 points in the losing effort.

The two sides will face-off again for the final time this season on January 24th at Everett High School with tip-off set for 7PM.  The Crimson Tide (2-1) and coach Chamblain will play J.E. Burke High School December 28th at the BABC Tournament before hosting Chelsea High School on January 3rd at 7PM.

Crimson Tide Basketball Set For Tipoff

The Crimson Tide and fifth-year coach Stanley Chamblain are set to embark on another championship campaign.

Following an undefeated (12-0) Greater Boston League run last season, the Tide are hoping to replicate that success and build on it beginning Tuesday, December 13 against rival Revere High School.

Everett topped Revere twice last season, including a 67-53 triumph on opening night.

With only four returning players from last season, coach Chamblain will rely heavily on new faces – along with some talented returning starters – to help carry the ranks.

Everett was ousted by North High School (Worcester) in the second round of last season’s division one north playoffs. Coach Chamblain is confident his versatile roster this year is up to the task of taking it further.

With COVID-19 cases rising, GBL temporarily postpones sporting events

By Lorenzo Recupero

Out of an abundance of caution, the Greater Boston League (GBL) postponed all sporting events for the first week of January, citing a holiday surge in COVID cases.

As testing sites all over the area feel the strain of the holidays, the GBL proactively waived off any competitions as area schools ease their way back into the classroom following vacation.

Joining Everett High School, Chelsea, Medford, Somerville, Revere, Malden, Lynn English and Lynn Classical High Schools will all put a halt to their respective schedules until Tuesday, January 11, at which time competitions will again be authorized to take place, per the GBL. Practices, however, can resume on Saturday, January 8th.

Riding a 2-game win streak, the Lady Tide are above .500 for the first time this season.

With shutout wins over Malden (16-0) and Chelsea (15-0), they’re now sitting at 3-2 ahead of the GBL’s inter-league tournament scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Revere.

The Everett bats and pitchers have heated up during the win streak, posting 31 runs and allowing none during the frame. In the June 2 in over Malden, Celeste Fuccillo led the way with 7 K’s over five innings and in the June 3 win over Chelsea sophomore Kristi Skane provided 4 innings of relief that included 10 K’s.

The EHS boys and the girls’ varsity teams played in the Greater Boston League championship games in Lynn Saturday, both going up against formidable foe Lynn English, the GBL’s newest entry into the league this season.

Winning the GBL championship 47-41, the Lady Tide (8-1) delivered the Bulldogs their first loss of the year while avenging their only defeat.

Everett was led on the strength of junior Andrea Manley’s five three-pointers (5-for-7).

Manley’s incredible shooting from behind the arc (over 70% efficient) capped a 27-point night for her, including 17 of Everett’s first 23 points scored by halftime. Senior Maya Kirnon came up big in the clutch for EHS in the second half.
