Is Spring here?

No it certainly isn’t.

As the late great poet WK Auden wrote of it: “April is the cruelest month.”

Very likely, April will be just that.

The middle of March is right now proving to be a bit like spring, with higher than usual temperatures and an almost complete absence of snow.

It is our third winter without measurable snow.

So there we have it – the feeling of spring in the middle of March.

It is a fools game for those of us who have spent our lives in New England hoping for spring before it should officially arrive.

Finally the spring

The spring has finally sprung!

The past weekend wiped out our memories of the rain and cold and finally…there was real warmth, major blooming and green- ing of grass and buds popping out on trees and bushes and tulips and roses looking as though they are on fire with brilliant colors.

Finally, spring is here and summer is readying itself to be upon us.

There is nothing political or perfunctory about the spring and then the summer.

It is a time of year when people fall in love, fall out of love, get married, get divorced, have birthdays, attend funerals, gush with pride over births and on and on and on.

It is impossible to know what this spring and summer will bring us as a nation, as a state, and as a city.

It is impossible to predict the future with any sense of certainty in today’s world.

The world itself is swirling with change and challenges as we enter the warmer part of the weather cycle.

The news is choking with reports of climate change and its inevitable effect on us all.

The spring is quiet

Following months and months of rancor and protests having to do with Everett city government there appears to have come a calm in the storm.

The news airways have quieted down.

It does not seem like the ship of state is sinking.

In fact, it is difficult to assess exactly what is going on.

The quiet is as confusing and off putting to clear thinking as a thick fog.

Mainly, it seems as though not very much is going on.

That being said, the biggest news outside all of this sudden quiet came about last week when the city wanted to get its legal bill paid with Greenberg Traurig.

According to documents that were discussed at last week’s city council meeting, the city has changed its ask for funding to be provided to pay the legal fees from $250,000 to $350,000 – which is frankly quite a leap in spending.

The money is needed to fund the ongoing Federal probe into racism and discrimination now being conducted by the US attorney’s office and the Justice Department.

The April Weather

These are the days that try men’s souls – women’s souls – kid’s souls – all of our souls.

It is called the New England Spring.

What a dreary time this spring has been so far.

One day we feel warmth, the next we need winter jackets. Half way through April we begin to kid ourselves – Spring is here.

Spring is not here.

Sometimes it feels like it might never arrive.

About a week ago, there was a day of warmth and sunshine. We all rejoiced.

Ah, we thought, Spring has arrived.

Some of us were walking around in short sleeves.

A Spring of First

By Josh Resnek

It is coming up on spring.  The spring of 2019.

This will be my first spring without my mother’s heart beating on this earth.

This is personal but on the other hand, there are dozens of you out there, hundreds really, thousands even, who have lost your mothers, or another loved one whose presence is sorely missed.

I lost my mother in July.

I went through my first fall without Mum – Labor Day, Thanksgiving, the Jewish holidays, Christmas, New Years Eve and on and on without Mum.

I’m going through the “firsts” this year, that is, the first spring, the first summer and then the firsts will be over because my Mum died last July.

When that first anniversary arrives, and the distance has grown further and further away from her touch, her voice, her love for me and for my kids and my wife and my sister – well, what is there to say?

Two days ago, a very dear friend lost her mother.

I knew the woman very well.

Shen had even written a book.
