Three indicted in Encore Casino cheating scheme

Two others charged in August stabbing

By JOSH RESNEK

Two separate incidents – a baccarat cheating scheme and a stabbing incident at the casino – have led to the indictment of five people, according to the Massachusetts Attorney General’s office.

The indictments were announced last Friday.

An Encore casino dealer, a former dealer from Maryland, and a third individual from Philadelphia were able to steal $23,500 over two nights, authorities said.

The second incident which led to indictments of two men involved a stabbing that occurred at the casino last August between a Framingham man and a Natick man.

The indictment for the cheating scheme indicates that Jianming Li, 53, of Delaware, and Jun Zhang, 41, of New York, have been indicted on charges of cheating under the Gaming Act (two counts each), conspiracy (two counts each), and larceny by a single scheme (one count each). Li was also charged with making false statements to the Gam- ing Commission.

De Lin, 46, of Philadelphia, was indicted on charges of cheating under the Gaming Act and conspiracy.

Mayor compliments casino despite recent stabbing, shooting and large party

By JOSH RESNEK

The casino and hotel logged a difficult few days last week with a shooting, a stabbing and a large private party in one of the hotel’s larger suites – a combination of events that has motivated Encore to clamp down on security.

The upping in safety measures is intended to enhance confidence in the safety of the casino and hotel for those who come to gamble or to stay overnight at the facility.

Encore officials have changed its policies and protocols to meet the challenge of some of its visitors’ violent behavior as well as to stop larger groups from having parties in hotel rooms, which runs against the state’s anti-virus rules and regulations.

Hotel officials put a cap on how many people can be in an Encore hotel suite or room at once.

Police are remaining closed mouth about whether or not Victor Mariscal, 27, who was charged with stabbing a man on Bradford Terrace on March 16, is the same assailant who stabbed to death 54 year old Michael Starr ten days later.

Officials familiar with the investigation who wished to remain unnamed said the two stabbing incidents on the same street during the same time of evening within ten days would appear to be the work of the same assailant.

“There are many similarities to the two crimes,” a police official added. “The State Police are trying to connect the two crimes,” he said.

On Saturday, Starr’s funeral was well attended by his many friends and family members at the Vertuccio Smith Funeral Home in Revere, where he grew up. Starr had lived in Everett on Bradford Court for almost three decades.

He was stabbed in the back, found by neighbors and rushed to the hospital where he later died, according to sources.

He was returning to his apartment after shopping at 7/11 in the crowded, closely knit neighborhood, when he was attacked.

Second to be Stabbed in Ten Days On Same Street

Everett Detectives and State Police have been working feverishly to snag a suspect in the stabbing murder of longtime Bradford Court resident Michael Starr.

Starr, 54, was apparently randomly stabbed to death as he returned home after leaving the nearby 7/11 store store last Tuesday night around 9:00 p.m.

He was transported to the hospital where he died. Police released a composite sketch apparently pieced together through interviews with neighborhood residents.

Also, police have examined surveillance camera videos in neighborhood stores in order to identify a suspect. Continue reading Intensive manhunt for killer at large; Stabbing victim to be buried Saturday
