Is Spring here?

No it certainly isn’t.

As the late great poet WK Auden wrote of it: “April is the cruelest month.”

Very likely, April will be just that.

The middle of March is right now proving to be a bit like spring, with higher than usual temperatures and an almost complete absence of snow.

It is our third winter without measurable snow.

So there we have it – the feeling of spring in the middle of March.

It is a fools game for those of us who have spent our lives in New England hoping for spring before it should officially arrive.

That is exactly what is happening right now.

It gets darker later.

The sun is warmer.

It feels like spring. It looks like spring but it is not spring.

And if you think it is, wait until April.

How many Aprils have we endured with snow and ice and freezing temperatures?

Many.

Could that happen this year?

Yes it could.

Will it happen?

Yes it will.

Never welcome spring before it has arrived officially.
